Absolutely! Bikram yoga is a beginners yoga sequence, perfect for those who have never tried yoga before or anyone wanting to improve their flexibility, balance, strength and overall health. It can also be an incredible challenge for athletes, and wonderful for recovery.
The heat is an incredible aspect of this yoga and has so many benefits. You can definitely handle it. Just take it easy and drink lots of water to prepare yourself for class. Don't forget to hydrate after class as well! You may wish to take electrolytes or magnesium if you practice regularly. Soon you will be addicted... and your skin will be looking fab from all the sweating!
Our studio's hot room sits at around 38 degrees, but it may get cooler or hotter depending on the weather.
Not at all. And with regular practice you will increase your flexibility and see great improvement. We all start somewhere.
We recommend hydrating really well during the day in the lead up to class. You may also wish to take electrolytes or magnesium! During class? We recommend just taking small sips of water as needed.
HOT TIP: We highly recommend that you hydrate well the day before your class, and during the day in the lead up to your class. About an hour or two before class commences stop drinking your water. This is so you don't feel too full and aren't bursting for the bathroom during postures.
For us, we just like to have a snack before class. We find that we prefer to practice an empty stomach otherwise it can be a bit uncomfortable. Make sure you eat really well during the day so you have the energy for your class and if you're like us you may wish to stop eating an hour or two before it gets started.
The first principle of this yoga is 'do no harm'. You know your body and if you feel a bit faint or unwell you can take a break, no worries! The heat is going to challenge you, but after a few classes you do get used to it and you can focus more on the postures. Remember, you are stronger than you think. This yoga will build your resilience in more ways than you will expect.
So, if you feel under the weather during class take a break. What does that mean? Stay in the room, sit down, sit still, and focus on your breath. Sip your water if you like. Take your break for as long as you need to and join back in when you're ready. Every class is different and some days you may feel that the class is more challenging than other days, even if you have been practicing for years! Don't worry about it, just do what you can and you will get the benefits.
Everyday? YES!
We recommend at least 2-4 times a week. The more often you come the more improvement you will see in your practice. And the better you will feel.
We do have a dress code, and this is to ensure that we hold a respectful, safe space for all students. We recommend that you wear light, comfortable clothing to your class. You will need to ensure that your clothing is suitable for stretching, bending forward and bending backwards. Shorts and a tank top or crop top are best (remember it is HOT). No underwear, bathers or bandeau tops please.
